Guru Nanak Jayati
Today Guru Nanak Jayanti or Guru Purab. This day celebrates
the birthday of the founder of Sikhism or Sikh faith "Guru NanakDev", born in the year 1469. A.D. He was born in the village of Talwandi
in Lahore, Pakistan. On this day, Sikhs celebrated the 10th birthday of 10 Sikh
gurus with true faith and devotion. They often do not worship any god or god
and believe that there is no god.
Guru Nanak ji presented five “Ks” to give the Sikhs a new
identity document. The five Ks include "Kesh" which means unkempt or
unkempt hair and beard, the word "Kara" which means it will be worn
on the scalp, "Kangh" on the hair, "Kaach" which means
short cuts and "Kirpan" or iron dagga.
On this day, people visit Gurudwaras to offer prayers at
Guru Nanak Dev ji. The celebrations started two days before the Guru Nanak
janamdin revisited the 48th book of the holy book "Guru Granth Sahib"or "Akhandpath" in the gurudwaras. This day is marked by the
commencement of performing prabhat pheris or early mornings in the Gurudwaras
and the people celebrating it by singing hymns or “pebbles”. Thereafter it is
followed by the Katha or exposition of texts and speeches and poems recited in
the praise of Guru Nanak Dev. A special public lunch or Langar and “Karah
Prasad” was made at Gurudwara and was provided to everyone. In the evening, the
Gurudwaras are illuminated by candles, advertising lights. The festival usually
lasts three days.
