Navratri,
which is two words — ‘nav’ (nine) and ‘ratri’ (night) — marks the victory of
goddess Durga over the demon, Mahishasura. Navratri is one of the main and important
festivals, celebrated to worship Goddess
Durga. It is essentially a nine-day festival where different forms of the
DeviDurga (Goddess) are worshiped. The festival is usually celebrated twice in
a year (April and October). Many
people observe a fast in this auspicious festival and visit temples to seek
divine blessings. Offering prayers to
the Goddess every day gives inner peace to devotees.

celebrate navratri ? let's know about History behind the Celebration of
Navratri Festival ?
The first of the two mythologies is the story
of the northern and western parts of
the country. It is Sri Rama's victory
over the cruel and demonic Ravana,
who abducted his wife, Sita. The
nine days of Navratri are recited or represented in the epic 'Ramayana' and on the tenth day there
is a final battle between Sri Rama and Ravana. Rama kills the ten-headed Ravana
with an arrow in his belly button, the source of his power and Ravana dies. The
same is also presented in Ramlila, which
ends on the tenth day, which is Dussehra.
The festival ends with the burning of effigies of Ravana and his brothers Meghnad
and Kumbhakarna.
The second story is about Goddess Durga. This is the main reason for celebration in the eastern
and northeastern states of India. It is believed that Goddess Durga fought with
the buffalo demon Mahishasura to
restore peace and religion. She succeeded and every year her success is
remembered through Durga Puja. The
story is written in the epic 'Devi
Mahatmya'.
However, in the southern states of the country, Navratri is celebrated by
worshiping various deities and celebrating their victory.
How to
celebrated navratri festival in India ?
During the nine days, people fast to please
the Goddess and offer prayers for the prosperity of the family and
business.These days decorated and idols
of Goddess in various parts of the country . Many people break the fast on
the eighth day (Ashtami) or the ninth day (Ram
Navami). In these two days,
KanyaPujan (worshiping girls) takes place because they symbolize Goddess
Durga. Girls receive several things to eat,
such as halwa, poori, chana, coconut, candy, money and other gift items.
After KanyaPujan ends, people break the fast. Bhandaras and Jagratas are also organized in several places.

The famous
Vaishno Devi Temple in Jammu sees a great avalanche of devotees during the

In Gujarat, people celebrate the festival in a
very cheerful way. The girls dress in
the colorful ghagracholis and the boys in the beautiful kurta pajamas.
People of all ages gather in a place where Garbha
or DandiyaRass Dance is organized.
West Bengal,
Eastern India
In the state of West Bengal, the festival is
celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor. On the last day of Navratri, the
idols that are placed in the Pandals are taken to a procession with people who play colors and dance. The
idols dive into the river.
