The first of the two mythologies is the story of the northern and western parts of the country. It is Sri Rama's victory over the cruel and demonic Ravana, who abducted his wife, Sita. The nine days of Navratri are recited or represented in the epic 'Ramayana' and on the tenth day there is a final battle between Sri Rama and Ravana. Rama kills the ten-headed Ravana with an arrow in his belly button, the source of his power and Ravana dies. The same is also presented in Ramlila, which ends on the tenth day, which is Dussehra. The festival ends with the burning of effigies of Ravana and his brothers Meghnad and Kumbhakarna.
The second story is about Goddess Durga. This is the main reason for celebration in the eastern and northeastern states of India. It is believed that Goddess Durga fought with the buffalo demon Mahishasura to restore peace and religion. She succeeded and every year her success is remembered through Durga Puja.
